Puglia's dry stone walls, hands on
Dry stone walls, muretti a secco, are built from local limestone without a drop of mortar, the same technique that shaped the trulli. In 2018 UNESCO recognized the art of dry stone walling as intangible cultural heritage. In the Itria Valley you can walk among these walls and learn to build one with your own hands.

A craft older than memory
Long before the trulli became postcards, the hands that built them already mastered a quieter skill: stacking stone so precisely that walls hold for centuries. It is still practiced today, by people who learned it the way it has always been taught, hand to hand, stone by stone.

Walking the land first
The experience begins outdoors, on foot. A trekking route through the countryside of the Itria Valley passes the dry stone walls that still divide the fields, the same low boundaries farmers have maintained for generations. You see the landscape as locals do: not as scenery, but as something built and tended, wall by wall.

Building, not just watching
Guests are shown in person how a dry stone wall comes together: how stones of different shapes are chosen and fitted so the structure holds its own weight, with no cement to hide a mistake. It is slower and more exacting than it looks, and that is the point.
